The Great Compromise

rom_border This past weekend, we started playing Dungeons and Dragons. Yes, you read that right; we actually started a Dungeons and Dragons campaign. (hey, don’t judge) We got the character sheets, the maps, the guide books, a four person party, a sadistic Dungeon Master, and multisided dice galore. Geek levels are at MAX, (and damn proud of it) though finding willing participants involved some compromises. To be clear, she didn’t actually play as Hello Kitty; but just wanted to use the figurine. (that could’ve been part of the original compromise) She makes awesome cupcakes and brownies, so it’s all good.

We’ve been itching to play ever since we heard the D&D podcasts with Penny Arcade and PVP playing with the Wizards of the West Coast. Listening to them play just brought back a flood of memories of how role playing was truly done. Now, the last time I played the D&D was back in Junior High School (where I’m from we called it Middle School) and we played it on a piece of grid paper with pencils and cardboard cut outs. (actually we still have cardboard cut outs, but hoping to upgrade soon) The game has significantly advanced in the past 18 years from hand drawing our terrain.

ZOMG! LOOK OUT! CARNIVOROUS BREAD SLICES!!

No, that’s not our set, unfortunately. Our geek levels may be max, but that shit’s turning it up to 11. We do the daily grind and that can take a toll on a person mentally and physically. Finding something you can enjoy and look forward to, whatever that may be, can be a life saver.

  1. I think when you throw yeast onto Gelatinous Cubes, they become Carnivorous Bread. Then, you can attack with fire and make a DC check for toast.

  2. I WISH that was our set... although Paladin HK probably wouldn't be able to turn around corners. At least she'd be fulfilling her role as tank/meat shield!
